THE STORY

OF WIL LAKEWOOD

JOIN OUR NEXT MEETING
The founder of WIL, Carissa Karner, has been a supporter of women and women's empowerment since her days as an undergrad at Smith College, an all-women's college in Northampton, Massachusetts.
She has been helping women heal and find their voice in her psychotherapy practice, as a leadership & speaking coach, and through her women's groups for the past decade.
When she attended the Women's Conference put on by Speaker Anthony Rendon in early 2023, she had a vision...

The idea for Women in Leadership (WIL) was ignited on March 25, 2023, when Carissa Karner attended the Women's Leadership Conference, orchestrated by Speaker Anthony Rendon, in the heart of Lynwood, California.

The conference was a celebration of women’s empowerment, and of women lifting one another up through support and community.

While chatting with other women at her table, a fellow conference attendee looked around at the diverse group of women talking, sharing, and networking, and she turned to Carissa and declared, "We should do this all the time”.

Carissa took a pause. "Yes," she thought, "We really should. How can we make that happen?"

As the conference came to a close, Carissa started speaking with another woman sitting next to her, named Rubicelia Prieto (Rubi). Rubi shared that she created Day of the Dead artwork and calavera (the tall, beautiful Día de los Muertos statues). Rubi shared that she wanted to bring her Day of the Dead art to Lynwood, but she couldn’t seem to get any doors to open.

As they chatted, Carissa noticed a Lynwood city official across the room. Excitedly, she pointed the official out to Rubi and  encouraged her to introduce herself and share about her business. Rubi was nervous, but as they spoke, Carissa noticed that the power of their connection gave Rubi courage. Rubi stood up and approached the city official.

Carissa watched as Rubi confidently introduced herself, and was rewarded with an animated exchange, a business card, a promise of a meeting, and even a hug.

Rubi came back to the table beaming, and said “we are going to meet to talk more!” Carissa thought to herself, "THIS is the power of women supporting women. This is women's empowerment in action. Just by supporting one another we can take actions that we might not have taken alone."

Inspired by this powerful interaction, Carissa felt an unshakeable determination to make the dream of a regular women's group, a group to encourage, inspire, and create a strong supportive community, a reality. She wanted to create a space that was inclusive and accessible to all women. She says, "I saw how we can lift each other up, how we can spark courage in each other, and all women deserve to have access to that." The vision of our Women in Leadership group was born.

Carissa took her idea to Arial (Ari) Pe, the Vice Mayor of Lakewood, CA. “I have a little idea…” she began. Ari was immediately supportive, and told Carissa that he would help in any way he could. He saw the potential of this group as a powerful way to support the women of Lakewood and surrounding areas.

Great things do not happen in a vacuum, and when Carissa took her idea to other city leaders, they quickly put their support behind WIL. Lakewood Deputy City Manager, Paolo Bertran, business leader and founder of Cassidy’s Corner Bakery, Joe Ung (who also designed the main portion of our logo), and the Lakewood Leadership Academy have all been instrumental in turning this vision into action.

This group is a place for women to lift one another up, because together, we truly are stronger. Together, we will achieve our dreams. Together, anything is possible. Together, we WIL.
